** notable deletions from the list: Oral language could arguably be considered on the list of greatest inventions but the origins of spoken language predate the dawn of Homo sapiens in 250,000 BCE. Also, the invention of the industrial research lab could arguably be considered the greatest invention of the greatest inventor, Thomas Alva Edison.
